SKETCHES

A narrative film I wrote, produced and directed as a result of a real life experience with young graffiti artists. It is about urban youth negotiating the cross currents of family and neighborhood loyalties with the urge for self-expression and the enduring conflict between independence of spirit and the need to belong. Creating mural art, from sketches to execution on a massive scale, these artists not only demonstrate genuine collaborative spirit within each 'crew' with leadership and racial harmony in their focused pursuit of originality, but humor, honor and a sense of fair play in the huge murals they execute together. Their esprit de corps speaks to grace and resourcefulness in the face of lost childhoods, superficial politicians and pundits, glamorized violence and a relentless consumer culture. It is the story of urban survivors who deserve support and respect.
